Selling mainly through our website, selected events & showcases and handpicked boutiques we are able to offer you the benefits of owning superior leather and basketry at affordable prices. We are passionate about our products and the people behind them, once you own one, we know you will be too..........MANY OTHERS TRY AND REPLICATE WHAT WE OFFER, BUT WE ARE CONFIDENT OF OUR QUALITY AND STYLE.
Local jobs for the local community.
Chameleon Earth will only offer products that support disadvantaged communities in Africa, India and islands between. One common thread unites our suppliers. Safe, clean working environments for their employees. In areas where employment is low, especially for women, our suppliers use small local artisan groups, family run co-operatives or local men and women thus enabling them to improve their standard of living, health care and opportunities for their families. In turn children are able to be raised in a safe, stable environment whilst their parents work. There are three main rules to the Chameleon Trading Charter :-
-
No children are used at any time in the making of these products.
-
Products are fairly traded, all workers are happy with the price they will receive prior to the making of the products.
-
Wherever possible, products used are from sustainable, recycled or eco-friendly sources. All leather and hides are obtained through government approved humain schemes which work towards the continued growth and protection of wildlife. Profits from the sale of the hides (all are bye products of the meat industry) are re-invested in animal conservation programmes.
The World of Chameleon Earth - Classic Range
From the moment you arrive at this 160 ha farm nestling in the mountains of Africa, you feel a great sense of calm, at home and welcome. The extended 'family' of workers blend seemlessly with the biological family of the owners. Established in 1990 this couple sought to provide superior quality in every repect, both locally for their workers and their families and in the items they produce. From rescuing a colonial and endandered 'trading post' building and resighting it to use as their retail shop to providing transport to and from school for their employees children. It became apparant very early to Chameleon Earth that we share the same ethos. The owners wife runs after school study and activity classes for the workers children. They subsidise the cost of school fees, books and activities and have now seen two children ernrolled in further education via their 'home grown' scholarship programme. Over the years they have assisted local entrepreneurs establish leatherwork. building, maintenance, taxi, and music businesses. As if that wasn't enough Amanda acts as Chairperson for a local Educational Trust, having headed the establishment of 2 primary and 2 pre-primary schools for local communities. Their belief is that education of young people, the future workers and leaders holds the key to social and economic transformation. Add to that the fact that they produce outstanding leatherwork of a world class standard and you will be left in no uncertainty that owning a Chameleon Classic bag will maintain a 'feel good' factor for years to come.
The World of Chameleon Earth - Natural Range
From a selection of producers, women's co-operatives and home enterprises, our natural range of bags are manufactured in the Indian Ocean Islands. In areas where there is extremely low employment opportunities, especially for women, the establishment of co-operatives, training and skills programmes has enabled these artisans to provide both safe and greatly improved standards of living for their children. Pre-school age children have the ability to remain at home with their parents whilst they work. Children are then able to go to school, safe in the knowledge that guaranteed family income brings stability, raised hope and security to their day to day living. All raffia used in the manufacture of our products is renewable and sustainable raw material which grows vigirously and naturally. Recycled products are used wherever possible. The leather and Zebu (cow) horn used is a by-product of meat production, which also brings considerable business to the community. Our jute bags are produced near Bangladesh by fair trade partners who, in many instances have no running water, electricity or service. Our suppliers have established long term working relationships with these marginalised communities, enabling them to utilise readily available natural resources and produce a much needed income for their community.
The World of Chameleon Earth - Exotic Range
Another African 'gem', this family partnership offers clean, professional and outstanding employment opportunities for local people in the community. Training and working conditions are 1st world, whilst maintaining the family links with the tannery that supplies the hides and skins in their collection. Using natural and eco-friendly dyes produced from Wattle and Mimosa trees, outstanding colours and finishes are produced to many of their leather range. All hides are obtained through government approved, humane culling programmes which sees significant re-investment in the protection of wildlife and their continued growth and health. All leather and hide used is a by-product of meat demand and both Nguni (native cow) and Springbok (a venison equivalent) are indigenous and considered part of the staple diet across Africa. Outstanding fashion statement accessories and timeless bags to be coveted for years are produced in an ethical environment. Coupled with the tannery, our suppliers have been able to create a significant amount of stable employment opportunities for many local workers from the community.
By purchasing one of these bags you are not only helping the environment we live in, you are also supporting a community of determined and hardworking men & women who, in turn, hope to provide a better future for their families.
